The 1992 presidential election was a significant realigning election after three consecutive Republican landslides. The Democratic Party nominated Bill Clinton, the Governor of Arkansas with running mate Al Gore, the Senator from Tennessee, pairing a Southerner with a Northerner to help balance out the ticket. They ran against Republican candidate and incumbent President George H.W. Bush and Vice President Dan Quayle. It was a close race, but William Jefferson Clinton pulled out ahead to become the 42nd President of the United States of America. Clinton was a New Democrat, and many of his policies reflected a Third Way political philosophy of right-wing economic and left-wing social policies. President Clinton presided over the longest period of peacetime economic expansion in American history and signed NAFTA into law. He was the first Democrat since FDR to be elected twice. However, he was also remembered for being impeached and a White House scandal involving employee, Monica Lewinsky.
