HAKI Round Four Wrap-up and Round Five Primer

Round four is over, the final round is upon us.  Welcome to the elimination round. A quick recap - The Hakeem Invitational, or HAKI as I abbreviate it, is an XB1 Duels tournament organized by Hakeem928 and MobiusChickenStrips of NGA fame/notoriety.  It is five rounds of swiss followed by a cut to top eight single elimination playoff.  A 3-2 record SHOULD be a lock for top eight. If you don’t...

Duels Diaries Week 27 - How to live and die in an Acid-Moss forest

Hello Duelers, This is Duels Diaries, where I write about the meeting of my two favorite pastimes - Magic: The Gathering and video games! What’s happening in Duels this week?  Well, the Hakeem invitational and iOS Duels tournaments rage on, but that only affects a handful of the Duels players and readers.  If you are just out there brewing decks and enjoying the game, there hasn’t been a lot of...

Duels Diaries Week 26 - The Lost Entry

Gone. Lost. Vanished. Yours truly had nearly two-thousand words written, which deep philosophical musings on the metagame, the round three HAKI results, the round four pairings, and intense insights into Magic as a whole.  It was witty.  It was funny.  It was smart.  It was a freakin’ Duels Pulitzer Prize waiting to happen.  And it will always be that way in your imaginations, because teacher, the internet ate my homework....

Weapon of Choice - CRATS - The search for the best Husk deck

Nantuko Husk is a better card than it appears to be. Killing a Husk is not a trivial matter if you surround your zombie insect with plenty of food.  Husk can be really hard to burn.  Reave Soul and Complete Disregard rarely hit it.  Fleshbag rarely hits it.  Languish rarely hits it.  Since you play it with a board, Celestial Flare doesn't really do the job.  The card is a scary...

Simic Ramp - Weapon of Choice

Today's Weapon of Choice is a Simic Ramp deck that I have registered for the iOS tournament. If you just want to watch the darn video without reading all those words, here you go - YouTube Twitch I have said about a bazillion times now that I think Gruul Ramp is the best ramp deck, and probably the best deck, you can play in Duels B4Z season.  So why work on...

Duels Diaries Week 25 - HAKI round two and hype for round three

Hello Duelers, It is that time, time for the weekly head-to-keys-to-internet mind-dump that is my Duels Diaries post.  I am a try-hard, I'm a spikier Spike then Bowser, King Koopa, and I treat Duels like it is the freaking Pro Tour.  It is my thing, I enjoy it, I love it, and perhaps you will to. Another week in my life is another week in the Hakeem Invitational XB1 Tournament,...

Building and playing a brand new Gruul Landfall deck

My take on landfall has been just about the same since Battle for Zendikar came out.  I love the idea of putting an aura and/or some pump spells on a landfall creature and dealing ten to fifteen damage on turn three.  Plenty of folks have done that, and it remains a focal point for most landfall decks.  However, if you can just drop a landfall creature on turn two and...

Reader Deck - Dustin's Esper Control

One of my readers sent me a list.  This happens often, but this reader really likes this list, and believes it to be a proper, pure Esper list.  Here is what was sent to me - (26) lands (with the mortuary mine) CREATURE (4) 4 Fielder cubs DRAW (9) 4 Artificers Empathy 4 Inspiration 1 Jace SWEEP (4) 2 Languish 2 Planar outburst COUNTER (8) 3 Horrible Arry 2 Scatter...

Deck of the Day - Boros Tokens/Thopters/Enchantments thingy

As the XB1 invitational rages on, I understand that not everyone is as enthralled in the matches and results as I am.  Maybe you aspire to battle in a tourney someday but don't feel like you are ready for that.  Or maybe you want to kick it casual and just want some new deck ideas. In what may become a regular feature, today's Deck of the Day will focus on...

Reactions to Round Two Pairings for the XB1 invitational

Apparently I have to be faster. I went to bed last night having just seen my pairing for round two, and I played a few games with DJ0045 and Infamous Gemini, and I planned to write a preview article this afternoon.  By the time I woke up, did some work, checked some email, and handled some housekeeping, there was already a round two match in progress on Twitch!  That was fast!...

Duels Diaries Week 24 - "The Mein Kampf of Magic Duels" XB1 Round 1 Review and Speculation

Hello Duelers, I am going to write almost exclusively about the tournament and provide links and written recaps of all the matches played so far....but first - I'll get the elephant out of the room - the title of this week's entry is in reference to a recent quote from the salty one himself, Mobius, who dubbed my blog "the Mein Kampf of Magic Duels".  It may, in fact, be...

XB1 B4Z Tournament Round 1 - Reactions to Pairings and Decklists

Hello Duelers, It's an exciting time.  Sixteen participants have entered the XB1 tournament, first prize is currently $100 in Xbox points, and I have just seen the decklists for the first time.  I have thoughts, musings, ramblings and opinions, and I wanted to write about it, so here I go. First I'll talk a bit about my deck choice for the event.  I had very little information to metagame with.  I knew...

Duels Diaries Week 23 - The 90% Club

Hello Duelers, I'm CovertGo Blue, or CGB for short.  I play Magic Duels way more competitively than it is intended to be played, and I write about it.  It is my thing, it doesn't have to be your thing, but I love it. I recognize that many players cannot do what I do, because it could take some of the life out of the game for them.  Instead of playing my...

DJ picks up the tempo

We received comments on Sunday's Duels Diaries post from DJ0045 with two new brews for me to play with. DJ is active on NGA, and we've had some fun battles on iOS.  I know he takes a methodical approach to building, and he has a history of dropping some fun-but-good lists on the community.  Last week he gave me a Sultai Husk-Abomination-Tutelage combo deck about half-an-hour before I challenged Hakeem...

Duels Diaries Week 22 - Why not me?

Since Duels Diaries Week One there has been a flaw in my process.  I can write all about what the best decks are, about my records with them, the quest for a 90% win rate, and I can put a lot of words on this blog saying things like, "I've tested this, I've played it, I've won a lot of games, I'm X-1, ect".  But is it true? I've had...

Duels Diaries Week 21 - Enough is enough, and it's time for a change!

Hello Duelers, It happened, I completely snapped.  There is a crack in the glass on my iPad, not on the screen but across the bottom of the home button.  I had been trying to connect to a game for over three hours.  The screen just said Searching For Players.... and that red wheel just kept wearing it's tireless circle on the screen.  Then, hope, a light at the end of...

So many decks, so little time...

Some people write an opinion piece to dump their opinions on you.  This is my opinion piece, and what I need are your opinions.  I have a unique first world problem - I have dozens of decks made, but no time to test them.  I am running my best decks in the double elimination style outlined in my last Duels Diaries entry, and it is still taking me up to...

Spikin' Rank 40!

Oh yeah, got there with U/W control, currently 9-1.  Also played Simic Tempo this week, went 9-2 I believe (I don't have my notes on me).  I'll write more about it in Duels Diaries.  Also, because the iOS bug wiped out my progress, here is my favorite screenshot from Duels this year so far - Congratulations on your rank zero indeed.  HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NOW? https://youtu.be/vg7ZrQKExIo Shamelessly taken from...

Duels Diaries Week 20 - Zendikar has come to the iOS, but will the players show up?

Hello Duelers, I have to open with some gratitude - Thanks to Kryder for all the data for the meta tally, and thanks to DJ0045, without him I doubt I would have anything to write about.  Read on for more. So it finally happened.  After I wrote my B4Z primer on Thursday, I actually took a nap for the first time in my adult life, because I wanted to be...

Your first stop in Zendikar

Well Duelers, today is, supposedly, the day, https://www.facebook.com/magicduels/posts/1680175378893340 I started hoping that this expansion would drop in the middle of September.  About three months later, after the steam folks got their Christmas present early, perhaps I will finally get to play this expansion.  iOS and XB1 servers appear to be down, and we have been advised they will be down seven hours (really, seven hours?).  After that, one can guess...

Duels Diaries Week 19 - Coming around full circle

Hello Duelers, It's that beautiful time of the week to check in and see what is happening with the Magic Duels metagame.  This week I've got some compiled metagame stats, a new brew, hopefully some insightful card discussions, and more of my ridiculous testing results. For those who are new, or just forgot, I play this game on iOS.  Yeah, we still don't have an iOS, XB1 or PS4 version,...

Deck Building with CGB: Let's Build Control

Today I want to try a new spin-off of Duels Diaries that I want to call my "Lets Build" series.  I'd like to take some time and really focus in on creating a specific deck for a whole article, and this is my first shot at it. I want to start the party by trying to build a control deck that will be successful in the new B4Z metagame.  Please...

Duels Diaries Week 18 - We have seen the meta, and the meta is ramp.

Hello Duelers, Now that my regular readers have more insight into my professional life (hint, it involves tee shirts on the internet), I don't mind dropping a little behind-the-curtain info - this week is a long one for yours truly.  The busiest eCommerce weekend of the year is upon us, and I am right in the middle of it, going crazy trying to keep all the ducks in a...

Just Lurkin' on Youtube and Twitch - I watch so much Magic so you don't have to.

Hello Duelers, A big part of the appeal of starting my own blog is so that I can fill it with content, whatever kind I like, several times a week.  Duels Diaries was started as a weekly forum post to discuss my decks, their results, and the Magic Duels meta, but how I create, play and test those decks is a longer story. I am not a naturally gifted deck builder....

Duels Diaries Week 17 ...sort of. New digs and the arrival of the Eldrazi

Hello Duelers, First, if you are here reading this, welcome to the new home of the Duels Diaries blog.  This is the place where I take the noob-friendly game Magic Duels and take it way too seriously.  I try to figure out the best cards, the best deck builds, the metagame, I try to find the perfect card choices to make a competitive deck, and I crush the competition in...

What is Duels Diaries?
