CGB's Deck Box - March 18th, 2016

This might be the final deckbox entry before our game gets a makeover.  I am spending next week in Florida, and hopefully around the time I come back we will get a massive update.  Even if we don’t, I will likely spend some time on paper Magic as Shadows Over Innistrad drops.  So where has all the battling and playtesting led us?

Gruul Ramp -

3 x Jaddi Offshoot

3 x Fiery Impulse

3 x Gatecreeper Vine

2 x Evolutionary Leap

3 x Rolling Thunder

1 x Nissa, Vastwood Seer

2 x Radiant Flames

4 x Nissa's Pilgrimage

2 x From Beyond

4 x Mwonvuli Acid-Moss

2 x Outland Colossus

1 x Greenwarden of Murasa

1 x Oblivion Sower

2 x Nissa's Renewal

1 x Gaea's Revenge

1 x Omnath, Locus of Rage

1 x Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger

6 x Mountain

12 x Forest

2 x Cinder Glade

2 x Canopy Vista

2 x Rootbound Crag

Obviously I fidget from week to week with various spots.  I think this version is the best for pubbing with randoms, or seal clubbing, and it can be tailored to your meta easily.  Lots of small creatures?  Gatecreepers and Evo Leap can be Twin Bolts.  Lots of Ramp mirrors?  You really want those Evo Leaps, and more monsters like Plated Crusher, Oran-Rief Hydra and Zendikar Incarnate can help.  Thopters everywhere?  You can sub in that swamp or plains to consistently Radiant Flames for 3, and get Gaea’s Revenge out of there.  This version has a little bit of everything for the God-knows-what meta.

Blue Ramp

3 x Jaddi Offshoot

1 x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy

4 x Disperse

2 x Displacement Wave

1 x Nissa, Vastwood Seer

3 x Natural Connection

3 x Nissa's Pilgrimage

2 x From Beyond

4 x Mwonvuli Acid-Moss

1 x Kiora, Master of the Depths

1 x Disciple of the Ring

2 x Outland Colossus

2 x Drowner of Hope

1 x Greenwarden of Murasa

1 x Oblivion Sower

1 x Part the Waterveil

2 x Nissa's Renewal

1 x Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger

6 x Island

12 x Forest

2 x Lumbering Falls

2 x Hinterland Harbor

3 x Simic Guildgate

I build this deck to be the Gruul Ramp killer, and I entered what turned out to be a very unpolished version in the iOS tourney.  Sadly, it never became the Gruul killer I wanted, the matchup is still not better than five hundred, but it doesn’t roll over either, and it has surprisingly good matchups against most of the field.  But this deck isn’t cute and it is not the good guy, the deck gets wins based on being the most brutal Acid-Moss deck in the field.  Bounce their card, Moss the land they used to cast it, get back Moss with Jace or Greenwarden, get back Greenwarden with Disperse and get Moss again…not the funnest for the opponent, but very effective.  Using Moss and bounce spells, including nasty Displacement Waves, the deck bottlenecks the opponent’s mana long enough for Ulamog to show up or for Drowner/Colossus to finish the job.

Jund Crats

4 x Blisterpod

1 x Bone Splinters

4 x Perilous Myr

3 x Carrier Thrall

3 x Rot Shambler

4 x Elvish Visionary

1 x Shadows of the Past

2 x Evolutionary Leap

1 x Liliana, Heretical Healer

4 x Nantuko Husk

1 x Nissa, Vastwood Seer

3 x Act of Treason

2 x Smothering Abomination

2 x Chandra's Ignition

1 x Ob Nixilis Reignited

3 x Swamp

2 x Mountain

3 x Forest

2 x Smoldering Marsh

2 x Cinder Glade

2 x Woodland Cemetery

2 x Rootbound Crag

2 x Dragonskull Summit

2 x Golgari Guildgate

4 x Evolving Wilds

I’ve been having a blast with my latest take on the deck.  Trying out Rot Shambler helped me achieve a +1/+1 counter daily quest, and I haven’t gone back to remove it.  Being able to have a creature that gets big and stays big like Shambles is very good against Ramp, Aristocrat mirrors, and Elves.  Having more large targets for Ignition is also very important.  Everyone scrambles to kill your Husk, meaning they don’t always have the extra removal around for Shambles.

Izzet Prowess

4 x Fiery Impulse

4 x Titan's Strength

3 x Clutch of Currents

1 x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy

2 x Abbot of Keral Keep

4 x Mage-Ring Bully

2 x Disperse

4 x Twin Bolt

3 x Jhessian Thief

1 x Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh

2 x Exquisite Firecraft

3 x Whirler Rogue

1 x Akoum Firebird

2 x Pia and Kiran Nalaar

8 x Island

8 x Mountain

2 x Sulfur Falls

4 x Izzet Guildgate

2 x Evolving Wilds

A viewer asked me to play this deck and I am glad he did, it has turned out to be a good deck for gold grinding and more consistent and reliable than Red Aggro.  It is one of two Izzet decks, and the question I keep asking is “Is this better than Thopters?”  The key difference is that this deck gets started on turn two, Thopters really gets to work on turn three if it is lucky, and turn four for real.  This deck is great for mind games, as it makes combat a nightmare, and it is the best home for the Shocks of the format - Fiery Impulse and Twin Bolt - because you get extra value off them with all the prowess threats.

Izzet Thopters

4 x Fiery Impulse

3 x Runed Servitor

4 x Perilous Myr

1 x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy

4 x Twin Bolt

3 x Pilgrim's Eye

3 x Chief of the Foundry

3 x Vile Aggregate

3 x Thopter Engineer

2 x Exquisite Firecraft

3 x Whirler Rogue

2 x Pia and Kiran Nalaar

2 x Thopter Spy Network

7 x Island

7 x Mountain

2 x Sulfur Falls

4 x Izzet Guildgate

3 x Foundry of the Consuls

My meta lately has been filled with Razorfoot Griffins (no joke, it is the gold grinding meta), so I am all-in on Fiery Impulse and Twin Bolt.  If your meta is different, I consider the Fiery Impulse spots very flexible.  Disperse and Fiery Conclusion are reasonable answers against larger threats, and temp spells like Brutal Expulsion can also have a place under the right circumstances.

So there it is, the final five decks that have survived the long and brutal Battle for Zendikar winter of Magic Duels.  I can’t want for some change-ups.
